Smashing WindowsI met Hunter S. Thompson when we covered the 1970 Kentucky Derby for Scanlan's Monthly. He was not what I had expected after reading his book on the Hell's Angels. No timeworn leather shining with old sump oil, no manic tattoo across a bare upper arm and certainly no hint of menace.
