Nelson Vails, 26, a National Sprint Cycling champion, Pan-Am Games gold medalist and 1984 Olympic silver medalist, learned to ride on the streets of his native New York. Friends called him Cheetah for his speed and competitive drive. Irate drivers called him less flattering names for his hell-bent style.
